Trump's January 6 Indictment and quote from Rep Aguilar

Last week, Trump faced his second federal indictment when a grand jury voted to bring four felony charges against him. The allegations in the indictment revolve around the events of January 6, aimed at overturning the election. Click here to read the indictment.

Despite the charges, Trump has pleaded not guilty and adamantly stated that he believes this is political persecution, a claim that the prosecutors strongly contest.

Here is a breakdown of each charge mentioned in the indictment:

  1. Conspiracy to defraud the United States: This charge points to Trump's extensive and repeated efforts to disseminate false claims about the November 2020 election while being aware that they were untrue. Additionally, he is accused of attempting to unlawfully invalidate legitimate votes, all with the purpose of overturning the election results.

  2. Conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding: Trump and his allies allegedly orchestrated a planned effort to disrupt the certification of the electoral vote in January 2021, which led to this charge.

  3. Obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding: Trump and his co-defendants are accused of actively trying to hinder the official certification process in Congress between November 2020 and January 7, 2021.

  4. Conspiracy against rights: This charge is based on a Civil War-era law and alleges that Trump and his co-conspirators engaged in actions aimed at suppressing, threatening, and intimidating people's right to vote in an election.

These charges mark a significant development in the ongoing legal scrutiny surrounding the events related to the January 6 events and Trump's actions during the 2020 election.

On ABC’s “This Week” House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Pete Aguilar refuted arguments put forth by Donald Trump's attorney, who claimed that Trump had no illegal intent when he sought to overturn the 2020 election.

"Everybody saw exactly what the former president was doing," Aguilar said. "We saw the attack on the Capitol, the attack on the police officers, and the insurrection."
