PEW RESEARCH: Public Support for Ukraine is Declining

Almost one year has passed since the Ukraine war began. The Biden Administration and most of Europe are increasing their support for Ukraine. According to a recent Pew Research Survey, the number of Americans who say the United States provides too much support to Ukraine has increased.

January 2023 Survey:

  • 26% say the US is providing too much support - up 6% from September

  • 40% of Republicans say the US is providing too much support to Ukraine

  • 15% of Democrats agree

  • 31% say the US is providing the right amount of support

  • 40% of Democrats say the US is providing the right amount of support

  • 20% say they want more assistance sent to Ukraine

  • 17% of Republicans agree

  • 23% of Democrats agree

Republicans have seen the largest shift in declining support for Ukraine - from 32% to 40% since September. Last March, only 9% of respondents held this opinion.

  • Only 15% of Democrats agree that we provide too much support. However, this is a 10% increase from a year ago.‌

  • 40% of Democrats think that we are providing the right amount of support

  • 23% say we are not providing enough support

The biggest partisan gap is on the question of whether the war poses a threat to the US. Last year, the majority of both parties (51% of Republicans and 50% of Democrats) felt that the war was a threat to US interests. The survey showed that now 29% of Republicans vs 43% of Democrats believe the same.

A large share of Americans approve of Biden's strategy to support Ukraine:

  • 40% approve of Biden's response

  • 34% disapprove

  • 61% of Democrats approve

  • 27% of Republicans approve
