Honoring Veteran‘s Day

Every year on November 11th, we celebrate Veterans Day to honor all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and our freedoms, and we owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid.

Originally, Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day, and it was celebrated to commemorate the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. After World War II, Congress passed a bill changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all veterans of all wars. The bill was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 1, 1954, and the first Veterans Day was celebrated on November 11, 1954.

Today, Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It is a day to thank our veterans for their service and to reflect on the many sacrifices they have made. It is also a day to remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

There are many ways to show our appreciation for veterans on Veterans Day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Say thank you. A simple "thank you for your service" can mean the world to a veteran.

  • Learn about the history of Veterans Day. Take some time to learn about the origins of the holiday and the sacrifices that veterans have made throughout our nation's history.

  • Attend a Veterans Day event. Many communities hold Veterans Day parades, ceremonies, and other events. Attending one of these events is a great way to show your support for veterans and their families.

  • Donate to a veterans' organization. There are many organizations that support veterans and their families. Consider making a donation to one of these organizations on Veterans Day or any other time of year.

  • Volunteer your time. There are many ways to volunteer your time to help veterans. You could volunteer at a VA hospital, a homeless shelter for veterans, or a veterans' organization.

  • Hire a veteran. When you're hiring for a new position, consider giving a veteran a chance. Veterans bring a wealth of skills and experience to the workplace.

  • Support veteran-owned businesses. When you're shopping for goods and services, patronize veteran-owned businesses. This is a great way to show your support for veterans and their families.

  • Advocate for veterans' rights. Make your voice heard by contacting your elected officials and letting them know that you support veterans' rights.
