Be Safe, Give Thanks.

Dear Leading Ladies,

As we look forward to giving thanks this week, albeit in altered venues with fewer people around our tables, we think about those in our land of plenty who are homeless, hungry, jobless, and without adequate health care. Administrators of nonprofit agencies advise that the best donations are financial rather than of goods, so that they may be used where most needed. Beverly BootstrapsFenway Health, the Greater Boston Food Bank,  HAWC and the Pine Street Inn are a few organizations that could use our charitable help at this time of year.

It is also not too late to help the candidates in the runoff senate elections in Georgia. Early voting begins December 14 and in-person voting is January 5. Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are running in an election that could flip the Senate to a Democratic majority. Support their campaigns or Stacey Abrams’ efforts against voter suppression.

Finally, an update on kNOw MORE, our new reading, watching, and listening group focused on today’s social issues. Our first discussion will be on Monday, January 25 at 7 pm, and will last a maximum of 90 minutes. The topic will be the play, Pipeline, which can be viewed by subscribing to Broadway on Demand for $8.99. In this poignant drama, a Black mother and father struggle to navigate the risks their teenaged son faces as he comes of age in a world divided by race, class, and money.

We invite you to watch the play in advance and then join us for what promises to be an enlightening conversation. If you would also like to read the script, it is available here.  Look for an email in the coming weeks with more information and a registration link.

The next kNOw MORE meeting will be Monday, March 22. We plan to share a documentary that we will rent for the group called Hungry to Learn which tackles the crisis of food insecurity among college students. Our third meeting will be Monday, May 24. Our subject will be the book, The Story of More, a primer on climate change by Hope Jahren. A scientist, writer, and teacher, Jahren shines a light on the link between human habits and our imperiled planet.

Going forward, kNOw MORE will meet Mondays on odd-numbered months.

For now, enjoy a safe Thanksgiving holiday.
