From The Homefront, Vol. 9
Dear Leading Ladies,
We hope that Mother’s Day brought some moments of joy to you and the mothers in your life this past weekend. We came across a video on resilience, strength, and motherhood that we want to share with you. It was created by an organization, Families Belong Together, that works to re-unite children who have been separated from their parents by ICE. Watch Where does the strength come from?
While we are on the subject of women, we suggest that this week’s action to be address the May 6 Title IX ruling by the US Department of Education and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Victims rights organizations and education groups are concerned that the new ruling
requires schools to use a narrower definition of sexual harassment than is used in employment sex discrimination laws, something they rationalize as necessary to protect First Amendment rights
still bars schools from investigating sexual misconduct between students that occurs off campus and not at school events, though schools can address drinking or fighting that occurs at such events
subjects survivors to live cross-examination by their assailant’s adviser or lawyer which could lead to fewer victims reporting their abuse
Please write your senators and representatives to voice your concerns about this rollback of rights for the survivors of sexual violence.
Lastly, we look forward to seeing many of you this Thursday night at our third Zoom discussion group at 7:30 p.m. We will be talking about the challenges and importance of engaging our youth to vote. We encourage you to watch a TEDx video, The Power of the Youth Vote, by, UC Davis political sociologist Mindy Romero, before the discussion.
