From The Homefront, Vol. 6

Dear Leading Ladies,

Another week has passed and we are all still sequestered in our homes, trying to stay healthy and sane. The challenges remain for all of us personally and for our country. We are attempting to find ways to stay engaged and to take action in ways that can effect change around the issues of getting out the vote in November, food insecurity, homelessness, climate change, healthcare, gun violence, equal access to education, racism and inequality.

The pandemic has brought societal problems around these issues into sharp relief, as we witness the virus hit communities of color and poverty with great ferocity; as underserved children have inadequate access to distance learning; as domestic violence rises exponentially; and as gun sales skyrocket, just to name a few of the results of the crisis. One positive result is cleaner air and water in our cities. On this, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, click here  for 24 hours of action to promote a sustained cleaner environment.

For those of you who missed our first Leading Ladies Zoom discussion group last Thursday, we urge you to join the next one on Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss voter suppression.

At our first, we discussed a TED Talk about the rise of gun violence and the role of the NRA in promoting the public fear that encourages private gun ownership for personal protection. For the next discussion, we ask you to watch a TED Talk by civic engagement champion Tiana Epps-Johnson about what is needed to bring voting in the US into the 21st century and to get every person to the polls. (It’s only 12 minutes long.) We will send out invitations to join the Zoom discussion.

Stay safe and healthy,

Therese
