From The Homefront, Vol. 5
Dear Leading Ladies,
As the pandemic rages on, efforts at voter suppression continue, sometimes in more nuanced forms, as in Wisconsin where Republican leaders insisted on holding a primary during the lockdown, forcing many voters to choose between safeguarding their health and going out in the rain to vote.
But there is some good news. In New Hampshire, a swing state that President Trump narrowly lost in 2016 and hopes to flip in 2020, the Superior Court last week overturned a law that made it very complicated and difficult for students attending school in the state to vote. This was the conclusion of a suit brought by the Democratic Party, the League of Women Voters, and college students. Read more about this story here.
However, there remains another law that levies high fees and taxes on students and workers who want to drive and vote in the state, thus discouraging their participation in the electoral process.
This week’s suggested action? If you work, live, have a vacation home in, go to school in, or have a child who attends school in New Hampshire, write to one or more state legislators expressing your support of House Bill 1264 because it makes voting more fair and equitable for all.
