Pew Research: The AI Jobs Worry Just Flipped Parties
Two years ago, Republicans were more likely than Democrats to expect AI to cost jobs. Now it's the other way around.
A new Pew Research Center survey finds that 75% of Democrats say AI will lead to fewer jobs over the next 20 years. That's up 17 points since 2024. Among Republicans, the number is 68% and has barely moved.
The unease runs deeper than jobs. Nearly two-thirds of liberal Democrats, 63%, say they are more concerned than excited about the growing use of AI in daily life. That's an 18-point jump since 2023. Over the same period, concern among conservative Republicans dropped 14 points. Pew surveyed 3,488 U.S. adults in late June, and the shift in just a few years is hard to miss.
That divide matters. It shapes what gets regulated, what gets funded, and who gets protected.
Right now, workers are being asked to adapt to a technology they had no say in building. Many are hearing that AI will help them. Many are wondering whether it will replace them.
The rules have not kept pace, and the current administration has shown little appetite for changing that. Without guardrails, the people with the least power in the workplace carry the most risk.
