Pew Research: Pessimism Is Not a Strategy

Nearly half of Americans believe their political system must fundamentally change — and don't believe it ever will.

Pew Research Center surveyed adults across 25 countries on whether they thought their political system needed major reform and whether they believed that reform was actually possible. In the United States, 77% of adults say major changes or complete overhaul are necessary. That is a supermajority. But here's the harder number: 49% of Americans fall into the category Pew calls "pessimistic reformers." They see what needs to change. They just don't believe it can.

Despite having the highest GDP per capita of any country surveyed, the U.S. stands alone. Every other high-income nation in the study trends toward satisfaction with its political system, or at least toward confidence that change is achievable. Not here. Americans are angrier, more discouraged, and more politically isolated than their economic peers anywhere else on earth.

Only 27% of Americans are what Pew calls "optimistic reformers" — people who believe the system needs major change and are confident that change is possible. Another 23% are "status quo supporters" who think only minor adjustments are needed. That leaves the pessimistic majority: a vast group of people who can see exactly what is broken and have lost faith that anyone can fix it.

That loss of faith is not a character flaw. It is a rational response to years of watching urgency go unmet and promises go unfulfilled. But pessimism, left alone, is not a strategy. It is a surrender.

Leading Ladies Vote is built for the pessimistic reformer who hasn't given up. The one who is still paying attention, still showing up, still believing that collective power — at the ballot box, in the streets, in the phone call to the senator — is the only force that has ever moved this country forward. It still is.
