Good News: He Thought He Was Filming a Goodbye

It was supposed to be his goodbye video. A 30-second plea, filmed late at night, before he closed the doors on the dream he'd built with his savings and his graduation money.

Alexander Quinones is 19. Last November, he opened Detroit Loves Tacos 2 in Taylor, Michigan, putting in $5,000 of his own savings, his high school graduation money, and a little help from his mom, Julie Stevens. He learned the trade as a kid, working alongside her in the catering business that became their family's first taco shop.

But the customers didn't come. For months, the shop barely made enough to cover ingredients and pay one worker. By April, Alexander was days from closing. He picked up his phone and recorded one last TikTok, telling the internet who he was and what he was about to lose.

By morning, the video had over 420,000 views and thousands of comments. By the weekend, customers were driving in from Ohio, Minnesota, and Canada. Detroit Loves Tacos 2 has sold out nearly every day since.

"I woke up in the morning, and he was viral, literally, like overnight," Julie said. "It was like a blessing."

He thought he was filming a goodbye. Strangers made it a beginning.
