We Showed Up

Dear Leading Ladies,

Attendance at the president’s birthday party, aka the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Army Grand Military Parade and Celebration, was well below the expected crowd of 200,000, according to the Associated Press. That is fewer than usually attend the annual Fourth of July festivities in Washington, DC.

He can blame the weather, but that’s a tough sell when the No Kings rallies brought out 5 million people in 2,000 locations across the country amidst lots of pouring rain in most of the northeastern states.

It was certainly heartening to see how many of us showed up for democracy and against the autocratic, dictatorial, monarchic president, his policies and his administration. Even though many were advised to stay home because it might be dangerous to protest, we still showed up.

With luck, our large numbers, loud voices and imaginative signs will have some effect, especially on the many politicians who want to keep or win races in the midterm elections, which are only 18 months away.

We wrote recently about the convincing arguments showing that rallies and protests work. They influence others to act up and speak out; they affect the behavior of politicians who depend on the will of the people; and they breed hope.We wrote recently about the convincing arguments showing that rallies and protests work. We must continue to show up for our own good and the good of the country. It’s necessary.

But not sufficient.

We also need to start thinking about the midterm elections in 2026. There are more than a dozen close elections for House seats and a couple Senate seats up for grabs that will determine the majority in both chambers of Congress. Most of us don’t live in states where we can vote for these seats, but we can write postcards, make phone calls, and send money to campaigns. To learn more about the candidates and their stands on issues, go to Force Multiplier  and The Cook Political Report.
