Send More Than Dollars
Dear Leading Ladies,
Whatever our reaction to the current state of affairs, we can’t complain of boredom! Every day seems to bring more surprises, some frightening, some exciting. Many, as we’ve noted before, totally out of our control.
Since the latest spate of news – the assassination attempt on former president Trump’s life and the discovery of an Iranian assassination plot; President Biden’s bowing out from the presidential race and the vice president’s rise to be the presumptive Democratic nominee – we have all struggled to avoid mental whiplash as we try to assimilate the news and what it means for the future.
What we still believe is that work remains to be done, actions to take, impact to make.
And, so, Leading Ladies reaffirms our commitment to getting out the vote – to informing people about social justice issues and problems facing women and families so that they understand how crucial voting is to the future of our people and our country. To everyone, we say, as one of our readers put it, “Vote because your life depends on it. No ‘as ifs’ about it.” And to our young people, we add, as homeland security expert Juliette Kayyem put it, “Vote for the country you want to inherit.”
Our new initiative is to support people writing postcards to reluctant voters in battleground states by providing postcards for free. The postcards all have images from the three top-winning posters in the Leading Ladies Art as Activism poster contest.
Research confirms that people who receive postcards encouraging them to vote are positively influenced by this form of outreach. We believe our postcards will receive additional impact because they are so attractive that recipients will want to display them on their refrigerators or elsewhere. There, they will garner more attention from family members and friends.
The first packet of postcards is free! Your only cost is for stamps. Each packet holds 15 cards, five of each winning design. Additional packets will be available for a donation of $6 per 15-card packet to cover printing and shipping costs.
Once you receive your cards, contact one of the following groups to receive a list of names and addresses to write to, as well as the recommended verbiage.
Thanks for joining the effort!
If you are able, share this letter with your contact list. If we all share it with even a few people, we could have a big impact.
All the best,
Therese (she/her/hers)
