Gobsmacked By The News? Read On.
Dear Leading Ladies,
The last week has left us gobsmacked with a new startling development almost every day. First, we had to digest the unusual presidential debate unlike any in our nation’s history, with President Trump interrupting former Vice President Biden with what most viewers and analysts agree were below the belt accusations and falsehoods while moderator Chris Wallace was unable to control the proceedings. Then, we found out two days later that President Trump has the Coronavirus, and, now, we find out that he may have known he had it as early as Wednesday. (His doctor said on Saturday that he was diagnosed 72 hours earlier.) As we continue to watch, read, and listen to the news, we learn of more and more politicians, reporters, and others close to the White House who are testing positive. We are also hearing of the treatments administered to the President that are not available to the general public, raising more questions of equity in medicine and care.

Also this week, CNN commentator, author, activist, and green economy entrepreneur Van Jones gave a lecture at Tufts University Tisch College of Civic Life. He spoke about the importance of voting but admonished viewers that voting is not enough. We all need to act too. Whatever it is that we care about, he said, we need to work for. For him, it is restorative justice; changing laws and practices that put blacks in prison for non-violent drug crimes that whites don’t even get arrested for; creating jobs and industries that will employ the poor in well-paying jobs that are good for the environment and address our climate crises. Moreover, Jones spoke about the need to find the best in the Democratic and the Republican traditions and work together, rather than throw rocks at each other. He sees value in both parties, though he is a Democrat himself, and looks forward to both sides working respectfully together again. As a ninth-generation American, he is the first to be born with full rights, he pointed out. That makes him hopeful. It also makes him committed to investing in a future that gives more opportunities and encouragement to the poor and those of color. Watching Van Jones provides a great antidote to the unnerving news this week. We hope you have a chance to watch it. Perhaps while you are writing letters or postcards to reluctant voters?!?
Thanks again to those of you who have supported our Facebook ads encouraging voters in battleground states! You are helping us make a difference in this year’s election!
Stay well, be safe, have hope.
