Be A Pest.
Dear Leading Ladies,
With less than a week until Election Day, our message this week is simple. Be a pest. Remind everyone you know to vote for candidates who support positions they believe in. For us, this means voting for local, state, and national candidates who are committed to access for all to quality education, health care, food, and housing; to sensible gun control laws and humane immigration laws; to reproductive rights for women; and to protecting and restoring the environment.
We know that people are exhausted by the pandemic and the strain it has put on families. Parents are working from home while trying to care for children and supervise online learning. Elders are isolated from their children and grandchildren, frightened of what Covid-19 could do to them. Voting for some of them can seem like just one more thing to manage in an already unmanageable schedule.
So, here’s where we encourage you to be a pest. Remind everyone you speak to how crucial this election is - from the local to federal levels. Then offer to be a voting buddy and drive someone to the polls (masks firmly in place, of course) or to watch a younger person’s children (outside, if possible, for safety reasons) while he or she votes. If safety concerns prevent you from offering this kind of hands-on help, suggest to folks how they can get to the polls more easily by using Uber or a senior ride service. If you can, offer to pay for a family who may not have the means to pay the fare.
We know that you know that this is the most important election of our lifetime. This is our last chance to convince others.
Be well, stay safe, have hope.
