Importance of the Youth Vote
Voting is habitual. Starting to vote early in life creates the habit of continuing to vote over the long term.
There are roughly ~80 million Millennials and about ~40.4 million Gen Zers eligible to vote in the upcoming election cycle. The two groups could potentially comprise nearly half (49%) of the 2024 electorate.
Aside from the large number of youth voters, they also bring a fresh perspective through their diversity. The current group of young voters is the most diverse in American history. About 43% of the eligible youth voters were people of color in 2020. (source)
According to research firm Edelman, 70% of Gen Zers are involved in a social or political cause. The University of Cambridge found that young people’s faith in democratic politics is lower than any other age group, which may be the cause of the number of Gen Zers involved in social and political causes.
