YouGov Poll: Americans Strongly Reject Military Force to Take Greenland

A recent survey by YouGov shows that most Americans strongly oppose any attempt by the United States to take control of Greenland—especially through military force. While President Trump has revived discussion of acquiring the island, public opinion remains firmly against such actions.

Only 28% of Americans support purchasing Greenland, while 45% oppose the idea. Support has increased modestly among Republicans, but Democrats and Independents remain largely opposed. Opposition becomes overwhelming when the question turns to military action: 73% of Americans oppose using military force to take Greenland, while just 8% support it. Majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans all reject the use of force.

Americans also express generally positive views of Greenland and Denmark, both NATO partners of the United States. About 63% view Greenland favorably and 60% view Denmark favorably, underscoring that public resistance is not rooted in hostility toward these countries.

The public is divided on whether Greenland is important to U.S. national security, with no clear consensus supporting annexation. More broadly, Americans show little appetite for territorial expansion at all. A majority say the U.S. should not seek to expand its territory, and support for expansion by force is extremely low across party lines.

Taken together, the findings suggest a clear disconnect between aggressive rhetoric around expansion and the will of the American people. Across political identities, Americans largely reject military force, favor diplomacy, and remain wary of actions that could undermine international alliances or democratic norms.
