Remember When: Latvia Declared Independence
Thirty-four years ago today, on August 21, 1991, the people of Latvia reclaimed their freedom. After decades of Soviet control, the Latvian parliament declared independence from the USSR — even as tanks rolled through the streets of Riga.
Latvians, like their Baltic neighbors, stood unarmed but unshaken. Ordinary citizens formed human chains, blocked convoys, and filled the streets in peaceful defiance. Their courage worked: by year’s end, Latvia’s independence was recognized around the world, and the Soviet Union soon dissolved.
Latvia’s story reminds us that democracy is never handed down — it’s won by people willing to risk everything for it. And though Latvia’s liberation came through resistance rather than open war, their struggle resonates today, as Ukraine fights to defend its sovereignty against Russian aggression.
On this anniversary, we honor the bravery of the Latvian people and stand in solidarity with all who resist oppression in pursuit of freedom.
