Pew Research: The Supreme Court Took Away a Right Most Americans Still Support

New Pew data reveals what the headlines don’t: most Americans — across red and blue states — still support legal abortion.

Nearly three years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the American public remains deeply engaged on the issue of abortion — and support for legal access remains strong in most of the country.

A new Pew Research Center survey found that in 34 states and Washington, D.C., more people support legal abortionin all or most cases than oppose it. For example, 81% of adults in D.C., and over 75% in several New England states(like Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island), support legal abortion.

Only one state — Arkansas — showed statistically significant majority support for abortion being illegal.

In 15 other states, public opinion is more divided — with no statistically significant majority on either side. States like Nebraska, Utah, Kentucky, and Louisiana fall into this category, with closely split views.

The findings underscore a powerful truth: even in states with abortion bans or restrictions, many Americans still support access — and the conversation is far from over.
