Economist/YouGov Survey: Americans Overwhelmingly Reject Military Invasion of Venezuela

A new Economist/YouGov poll (Dec 20–22) confirms what other surveys have shown: Americans do not support Trump’s military intervention in Venezuela — and they want Congress to act as a check on presidential power.

Why it matters

The Trump administration continues to escalate military action without clear congressional approval, framing the conflict around oil and narco-terrorism. But Americans across party lines aren’t buying it. They see no national emergency, oppose regime change by force, and demand congressional authorization.

The U.S. Constitution gives Congress — not the president — the power to declare war. According to a PBS fact check , Trump’s claim of legal authority for the Venezuela strike is misleading — and the action likely violated both domestic and international law.

Here’s where the public stands:

Invasion? Most say no.

Only 19% support using military force to invade Venezuela.
60% oppose it.

Regime change? Also unpopular.

Just 22% support using military force to overthrow Maduro.
52% oppose.

Oil blockade? Mixed reaction.

Just 35% approve of a U.S. blockade on sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers.
40% disapprove.

No blank check for Trump.

74% of Americans — including 58% of Republicans — say Trump must seek congressional authorization before using military force.
Even 54% of MAGA Republicans agree.

No national emergency.
Only 18% of Americans believe Venezuela is a national emergency.
Most Democrats and Independents — and even a third of Republicans — disagree with that claim.

Bottom line

The American public is demanding truth, restraint, and oversight. They reject unilateral war powers and see this intervention for what it is — not a just war, but a political power play.
