Holding Their Feet to the Fire

Dear Leading Ladies,

Two weeks ago we were wringing our hands with despair that the November elections might be upended by threats to voter certification in several states including Georgia, where recent rulings by a newly appointed pro-Trump majority state election board passed new rules that purport to legalize the blockage of certification of votes.

Then, just last week, we felt some renewed hope when there was what Rachel Maddow described as “ferocious voter registration pushback.” Local election officials and state legislators in Georgia began fighting the new rules. Democratic congresswoman Lucy McBath declared that these new rules seem to violate the way these bodies are supposed to operate. And, perhaps most notably, Republican Georgia Governor Brian Kemp made a request to Georgia State Attorney General Christopher M. Carr, asking if he has the power as governor to remove members of the state election board if it’s warranted by ethics concerns. Wow!

Let’s tell the governor and attorney general why they need to listen to the “better angels of their nature” and do the right thing. Let’s write to Governor Kemp and Attorney General Carr and tell them something like this:

Dear Governor Kemp or Attorney General Carr,

We urge you to do the right thing and make sure that the votes of all registered voters in the state of Georgia are counted.

The eyes of America are watching as you set an example of democracy at work.

Thank you,

Joe, a grateful US voter

The address of the governor is:

206 Washington Street

Suite 203, State Capitol

Atlanta, GA 30334

The address of the attorney general is:

40 Capitol Square, SW

Atlanta, GA 30334

If everyone in the households of all our readers sent one postcard each to the Georgia governor and attorney general, they would be deluged with hundreds of requests that they act responsibly and honorably to certify legally cast votes. The efforts would probably be most effective if we didn’t all send the same postcards, much as we love our Art as Activism images, so for this campaign, please use cards of your own.

Clearly, we can use our voices beyond our votes.
