From The Homefront, Vol. 16
Dear Leading Ladies,
Recently, Pingree School in South Hamilton hosted a virtual town hall forum featuring DeRay McKesson, a nationally-known civil rights activist, podcaster, and former classroom teacher and school administrator. Dr. Tim Johnson, head of Pingree, has generously permitted us to share a link to the presentation with Leading Ladies.
As you will see and hear, Mr. McKesson shared important and eye-opening data, action steps, and provocative questions with the audience. He shared his beliefs that effective activism requires participants to do the research to become experts on the relevant information, to keep asking questions, and to be imaginative in working towards a new future. Please click here to view the recording.
We will have a discussion about Mr. McKesson’s presentation on Zoom on Thursday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. You can find the link here, and the password is LadiesLead.
Speaking of activism, we have all been impressed by seeing young people standing up and speaking out for social justice in the past several weeks. Unfortunately, their actions may not indicate their intentions to cast their ballots, according to some recent data in an Associated Press article entitled “Young People Turn Out in Protest. Now, Will They Vote?”
What can we do to encourage young voters? We are still working on a video campaign with youth, but also looking for other out-of-the-box ideas. If you have one, please share it with us!
As always, we hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and well.
Best,
Mary
